Americans’ Concerns About AI Usage and Its Impact on Jobs

Many Americans believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a reduction in jobs across the U.S. However, job loss is not their only worry. They doubt if the U.S. government will establish policies to regulate the appropriate use of AI technology. This skepticism is prevalent among various age groups and educational levels. While both Democrats and independents express these concerns, Republicans are more divided on the issue.

The perception of AI’s impact varies. Many think AI companies aim to simplify daily tasks, yet there is a strong belief that companies intend to replace human workers with AI. Two-thirds of Americans doubt the government will intervene effectively to ensure AI is used properly. Those skeptical of government policies are more inclined to believe that AI will eliminate jobs in the U.S.

When asked about motives behind the promotion of AI, a majority see companies seeking to increase their power and replace human workers as primary reasons. Fewer, but still significant numbers, believe AI is encouraged for scientific and medical breakthroughs and to make tasks easier.

AI and Employment Concerns

The expectation that AI will reduce jobs persists. Both younger and older Americans anticipate job losses, though younger individuals less so. This difference may be attributed to younger people being more acquainted with AI technologies. Previous CBS News polls highlight that younger respondents often report personal use and better understanding of AI than older individuals.

The CBS News/YouGov survey gathered responses from 2,064 U.S. adults between May 13-15, 2026. The sample was designed to reflect a cross-section of the U.S. population in terms of gender, age, race, and education. The margin of error for this survey is ±2.7 points.
