Grand Jury Declines to Indict Cassidy Hutchinson

A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., decided not to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to the Trump administration, after the Justice Department sought criminal charges related to statements she made to Congress in 2022. This information was confirmed by two sources to Fox News Digital.

The Justice Department had aimed to charge Hutchinson with lying to the House committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. However, the effort did not succeed as the grand jury declined to indict her on Tuesday. It is unclear if prosecutors will try again to secure an indictment.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testifies before the House Jan. 6 committee June 28, 2022.

Hutchinson rose to prominence as a key witness before the committee investigating the January 6 events and former President Trump’s actions to contest the 2020 election results. She testified in a televised hearing in June 2022, detailing President Trump’s behavior on January 6, including a story she recounted from another White House official about Trump’s reaction after being told he could not go to the Capitol. This account of an alleged incident in the presidential vehicle was later challenged by others familiar with the situation.

Fox News Digital reported that the grand jury had considered evidence related to possible false statements by Hutchinson to the congressional committee. A source mentioned that more evidence could be brought before the grand jury and that a final decision on charges had yet to be made.

The New York Post also noted that the Justice Department was looking into Hutchinson’s potential false statements to Congress. However, the grand jury’s decision not to indict her does not determine the truthfulness of her congressional testimony, which Hutchinson has stood by.

Fox News Digital sought comments from the Justice Department and representatives involved in the committee. The outcome of this decision remains an important aspect for the ongoing investigations and proceedings related to the January 6 Capitol riot.
