Travelers heading to Italy and Spain this week should prepare for possible transportation issues. Workers in both countries have planned strikes that may cause significant disruptions.
Spain’s Rail Strike
In Spain, train drivers from the SEMAF union plan a 24-hour strike on Thursday, Oct. 29. This strike affects Renfe, the national rail company. The union is protesting over railway safety, working conditions, and unmet commitments.
The strike will last from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The Spanish government has mandated that 73% of Renfe’s high-speed and long-distance trains, along with 65% of medium-distance trains, continue operating during this period. Despite some opposition, Renfe claims to have fulfilled agreements made in February, including steps to improve the rail system. The company also stated it has initiated additional hiring and maintenance efforts.
Italy’s Nationwide Strike
In Italy, a nationwide strike is set for Friday, Oct. 30. This includes transport workers and may affect various travel options. Rail workers plan to strike from 9 p.m. Thursday until 8:59 p.m. Friday. Additionally, ground-handling workers at Florence and Pisa airports are also planning a 24-hour strike.
This unrest is part of broader issues in Italy, spurred by the cost of living, wages, pensions, and opposition to increased military spending. Recent protests have led to confrontations and increased military presence in Milan.
Travelers React
The looming strikes have made some tourists reconsider their travel plans. On social media, travelers have debated whether to continue with their scheduled trips. Some recommend checking if their trains are on guaranteed service lists, while others prefer to avoid disruptions entirely.
The situation highlights the importance of staying informed about travel conditions. Travelers should monitor updates from transportation authorities before making final decisions.
