Controversy and Defense in the WNBA Finals

Recent events in the WNBA Finals have sparked debate after players from the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries walked off the court during the national anthem, attracting criticism from Fox News host Will Cain. This act was against league policy.

Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko defended star player Angel Reese after a tough Game 5 loss, arguing officiating errors marred the game. He claimed excessive contact occurred against Reese, despite her known defensive prowess.

Smesko stated, “I give credit to the Valkyries for their defense, but the contact on Angel is just ridiculous.”

Reese ended with seven points but managed to grab 15 rebounds in this 64-55 defeat, leaving the Dream close to elimination. Game 6 returns to Atlanta under intense scrutiny.

Smesko added his concerns about officiating, noting errors in calls on double-dribble and traveling violations, echoing Reese’s frustrations with physical gameplay and questionable calls this season. Reese said the physical play felt familiar and expressed frustration over teammates being unfairly treated.

Reese shared, “The mismatch in post switch plays should allow me to score, yet offensive fouls are called while I am pushed around.”

Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase commented, expecting intense play typical of championship series, highlighting both teams’ preference for defensive strategies.

The Dream made just 14 free throws, their lowest playoff attempt this postseason. Reese noted a shift in officiating after Atlanta led the series two games to one.

Game 5 emphasized defensive play, with Atlanta falling to a 64-point effort from Golden State, marking the lowest score from a Finals game victor since 2005.

Smesko and Reese’s comments raised questions on potential disciplinary actions. Past incidents saw coaches fined for criticizing officials. The league acknowledged reaching out to both teams for more insights on Smesko’s and Reese’s remarks.

Game 6 commences in Atlanta at State Farm Arena, adjusted to accommodate schedules with the Hawks. Smesko expressed disappointment over the timing, acknowledging many may miss the afternoon match.
