Surge in Pokemon Card Thefts Across California
A surge in Pokemon card thefts has been reported across California and beyond. San Francisco police recently arrested juveniles involved in a pepper spray robbery, utilizing high-tech tools. Meanwhile, a separate incident in Brentwood saw masked thieves steal thousands of dollars worth of cards in under a minute. This prompted the store owner to enhance security measures.
Massive Card Heist in Santa Ana
In a major theft, nearly $1 million worth of trading cards were stolen from a FedEx truck in Santa Ana. The incident occurred outside Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA) and involved over 200 packages. Santa Ana police estimated the value of the cards at approximately $963,000. Both sports and Pokemon cards were included in the theft.
The thief gained access by breaking the truck’s lock while the FedEx driver was away.
Collector’s Perspective on the Loss
Card collector and YouTuber SKY-B was among those affected. He stated that 104 of his cards were stolen, with many being ‘irreplaceable.’ Some were case hits, ultra-rare cards, or unique one-of-one items.
“We are aware of a theft involving a third-party shipping vehicle carrying PSA-graded items,” Collectors said in a statement. They are working closely with law enforcement and the carrier on the ongoing investigation.
Security Measures and Market Vigilance
Collectors Clubhouses is not only selling card packs but is also hosting rare cards. Following the theft, they deactivated certificates for the stolen items and alerted marketplace partners to monitor for rare and serialized items. Affected customers are being directly contacted and compensated based on fair market value.
“We understand the impact on collectors; these cards are more than financial assets. Our team is committed to accountability,” Collectors stated.
Ongoing Investigation
No arrests have been made, and the stolen cards remain unrecovered as the investigation continues.
