Family History Surfaces in Minnesota Senate Race

The upcoming Minnesota Senate race has been stirred by revelations about the family history of Democratic candidate Peggy Flanagan. Details about her grandfather, John Jacob Hartmann, were brought to light by Alpha News. Hartmann’s past includes decades in psychiatric care and escape attempts, although he faced no charges for suspected killings.

These findings emerged just before the midterm elections where Flanagan contests former sports reporter Michelle Tafoya for a Senate seat. To date, neither candidate has commented on these resurfaced allegations.

Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA referenced mental health issues in Flanagan’s family on social media. Additionally, columnist Dustin Grage noted the report aligns with previous information.

Flanagan has frequently discussed her upbringing, raised by a single mother assisted by SNAP benefits and influenced by her indigenous father. Less known is her connection to her grandfather, who appeared in Minneapolis papers during the 1970s and 1980s due to his psychiatric confinement and allegations.

Hartmann died in 1983 when Flanagan was young. She was raised by her mother, Patricia Hartmann, and later stepfather, Thomas Flanagan, after her grandmother had raised four daughters as a single parent.

In earlier reports from the Minnesota Star Tribune, Hartmann was committed to a hospital in 1951 after being declared mentally ill following a fatal incident. He was also a suspect in other violent cases but never charged. He escaped custody at times, living in New Mexico before being deemed stable by authorities and later apprehended in Colorado.

Hartmann’s multiple escapes led to incidents, including one where he allegedly threatened a U.S. District Judge in Missouri in 1979. Federal authorities later charged him for this threat.

Elaine Mallon, reporting for Fox, contacted Flanagan’s campaign for comments on this development, signaling ongoing interest in how this influences her Senate campaign.
