Senior quarterback August LaBranche is making waves in his new role at Crete-Monee, often resembling a master magician with his ability to mislead opposing defenses. His talents shine through as the Warriors employ various running backs and deceptive tactics, keeping their opponents in the dark about the next move.
Despite a reduction in passing plays compared to previous seasons, LaBranche’s execution remains crucial. ‘We practice it a lot,’ he stated. ‘It’s fun to fake out the defense and even more fun to score touchdowns. It’s a new system for me, but as long as we’re winning, that’s all that matters. I’ll adapt to any system I need to.’
On Saturday, LaBranche showcased his skills perfectly as the Warriors rushed for a remarkable 456 yards in their 43-6 Southland Conference triumph over Bloom in Chicago Heights. He ran for one touchdown and threw for another, leading his team to victory.
Dominic Jackson had an outstanding performance, rushing for 102 yards and scoring two touchdowns on just eight carries. He also completed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kamal Bryant and played a key role on defense, registering a sack and two tackles for loss. Anson LaBranche, August’s twin brother, contributed with a sack, while Jayvien Pearson secured an interception.
Bloom’s Jovarion Wilson managed a 4-yard touchdown, while Isaiah Dunlap accumulated 47 yards passing and 32 yards rushing. The LaBranche twins are making significant impacts all across the field, reveling in their opportunity to play together. August reflected, ‘It’s really amazing. We have a lot of chemistry, and being on the field together helps us make plays.’
Anson, a senior linebacker and running back, takes pride in watching August seize his first starting role at quarterback. ‘I think he’s performing well in the system,’ Anson commented about August. He added that August has adjusted effectively to both the passing game and the intricate play motions.
Coach John Konecki agrees with Anson’s observations. ‘August has done a fantastic job with this offense,’ Konecki remarked. ‘He’s evolved into his position, and we’re fortunate to have many players who can step up and make plays.’ August scored again on a 4-yard run and completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Aven Atkins, leading the Warriors to a 43-0 advantage at halftime.
Anson’s contributions extend beyond defense, as Konecki praises his blocking abilities. ‘Anson is outstanding on defense and as a blocker on offense, he’s like having an extra guard. His blocking ability can be devastating.’
On Saturday, Anson also tried his hand at the Wildcat quarterback position, offering a fresh perspective similar to his brother’s experience. ‘Playing quarterback briefly was fun and gave me an insight into August’s role,’ Anson stated. ‘It’s enjoyable doing this with August as seniors.’ The twins reminisce about their longtime teamwork dating back to childhood.
August appreciates having Anson by his side. ‘Growing up, we supported each other, sometimes fought, like brothers do,’ August explained. ‘But he’s helped me quite a bit. We’ve always practiced together, and he’s always there for me when I need him.’
