Travezz Jones Shines in City Championship Win Over Kenwood

Morgan Park’s senior wide receiver, Travezz Jones, has shown remarkable ability in maneuvering on the field and impeccable timing in crucial plays. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 165 pounds, Jones displays a strong presence during the game. His decisive actions during the city championship at Lane Stadium in Chicago led Morgan Park to a 24-14 victory against Kenwood.

Reflecting on his performance, Jones stated, “The ball was there, and I knew I had to help out my team and get us going because we were playing kind of flat. That brought us all of the energy that we needed.” Indeed, Jones’ touchdown and 2-point conversion were pivotal in energizing the Mustangs, aiding their comeback.

Joining the effort, Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. delivered impressive results, completing 14 of 21 passes for a total of 181 yards and three touchdowns. Morgan Park, boasting an 8-1 record, claimed the Public League Red Star title with these contributions. Another standout was junior wide receiver Jaxon Bland, who also scored a TD and a 2-point conversion.

Kenwood’s quarterback, Malachi Henigan, made noteworthy progress for the Broncos with a 78-yard touchdown pass and a 4-yard touchdown run, leading his team that had earlier secured the Public League Red Shield title.

“I’ve had him all four years, and he’s just become more mature,” said Morgan Park coach Chris James regarding Jones. “I knew we had to go to him. When we needed him the most, he really stepped up and made plays. He’s always ready to make plays.”

Jones, in his role as a leading catcher, wrapped up the game with five receptions for 76 yards. His seamless connection with quarterback Smith proved invaluable, particularly in moments like the 27-yard touchdown catch that erased Kenwood’s halftime lead.

Jones’ quickness and dynamic execution in open plays posed challenges for Kenwood’s defense. His strategic placement on the field allows him to employ speedy maneuvers and physical prowess to excel, as demonstrated during the third quarter comeback.

Moreover, his impactful 23-yard catch on a third-and-19 was instrumental in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for Bland’s decisive touchdown. Jones highlighted, “The game is all about confidence, and I had so much after I scored the touchdown… I was going to do whatever possible just to keep the offense rolling.”

Aside from athletic prowess, Jones’ route running, ball tracking ability, and receptive hands further enhance his value on the team. His position as a slot receiver is where he frequently capitalizes on opportunities to influence the game’s outcome.

Jones has received a scholarship offer from Western Illinois, signaling a potential future in college-level football. His journey reflects the influence of his older cousins who contributed to his early recognition of talent and dedication to the sport.

With an intrinsic competitive spirit, Jones maintains a significant rapport with teammates Smith and Bland, enhancing their on-field synergy. He remarked, “That competitive part, I think, is just something I was born with. I adapted it as soon as I picked up a football.”
