The Philadelphia Eagles have put quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after he was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot. This decision means he will miss at least four games.
An official statement from the Eagles on Thursday highlighted the medical condition of their star quarterback. Hurts had been receiving treatment for nearly a week and even traveled to and from London while managing the condition. He played during the Eagles’ game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars and participated fully in practice on Wednesday, a day before he was ruled out for Sunday’s game.
Medical Developments and Team Statement
According to the team, Jalen Hurts sought treatment for a calf injury on Thursday, October 8th, after practice. He mentioned to the medical staff that he had been impacted during the game against the Los Angeles Rams on October 4th. Despite this, he completed practice sessions both Wednesday and Thursday.
By Friday, Hurts continued receiving treatment and practiced fully, but he was included in the practice report. An ultrasound performed on Saturday following the team’s trip to London identified a superficial blood clot. After consultation with medical professionals in London, it was concluded that maintaining activity and mobility was safe for Hurts. They recommended another ultrasound within 72 hours after the game and following the return trip to Philadelphia.
Hurts played without limitation in the London game, continued treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and fully practiced on Wednesday. An additional ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed movement in the clot, prompting the team’s decision to sideline Hurts for the game against the Carolina Panthers.
“His health and safety are our highest priority,” the team stated.
Impact and Potential Risks
Blood clots are particularly concerning as they can obstruct blood flow to critical organs, leading to severe conditions like pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. They need prompt treatment to prevent severe damage or fatality.
Eagles’ Backup Plan
With Hurts sidelined, Tanner McKee, a third-year veteran quarterback, is positioned to start against the Panthers. McKee has taken the starting role in two games before, with the team splitting those games, winning one and losing the other. The Eagles will also miss the contributions of DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley, who have been unavailable due to their injuries.
The Eagles anticipate Hurts to be eligible for a return in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers following their Week 10 bye.
