Broncos Clinch Overtime Win Against Seahawks Thanks to Lutz’s Field Goal

The Denver Broncos secured a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, courtesy of a 53-yard field goal in overtime by kicker Wil Lutz. The game took place on Thursday night, featuring moments of tension and strategic plays.

Overtime Drama

In the sudden death overtime, the Seahawks had the ball first. On a critical third-and-7 from their own 28-yard line, quarterback Sam Darnold attempted a risky pass into double coverage along the sideline. Denver’s cornerback, Ja’Quan McMillian, anticipated the throw, intercepting it and positioning the Broncos at Seattle’s 43-yard line.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton then opted for a strategic run play. By running the ball three consecutive times, Payton aimed to control the clock and place the ball at the center of the hash. This setup allowed Lutz to seal the game with his reliable field goal.

Game Highlights

Both teams debuted their throwback uniforms in a unique color vs. color matchup. Denver wore the iconic orange crush uniforms, while Seattle sported royal blue.

Early in the game, the Broncos exhibited precise execution. They dominated possession in the first half, establishing a 14-3 lead with touchdown drives concluded by short runs from J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey.

Second Half Challenges

After halftime, Denver’s offense struggled significantly. Quarterback Bo Nix faced hurdles, ending the game with only 107 passing yards and lacking a downfield threat. As Seattle mounted a strong comeback, they reduced the deficit to 14-11 through a touchdown from George Holani and a two-point conversion pass from Darnold to Rashid Shaheed. As the clock wound down, Jason Myers kicked a 34-yard field goal, forcing the game into overtime.

Defensive Prowess

Despite offensive setbacks, Denver’s defense proved resilient. Even without Patrick Surtain II, the front seven pressured Darnold throughout, recording five sacks and causing crucial turnovers. Nik Bonitto stripped Rashid Shaheed of the ball in scoring territory, Kris Abrams-Draine secured a fourth-quarter interception, and McMillian’s overtime interception clinched the win.

Seattle tallied 353 yards of total offense, with standout performances such as Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 12 catches for 134 yards. However, three critical turnovers neutralized their efforts.

Looking Ahead

The Broncos aim to improve offensively before facing the Arizona Cardinals. Their current record stands at 4-2, trailing only the unbeaten Kansas City team in the division standings. Although the game showcased Denver’s defensive strengths, it also highlighted areas needing improvement.
