Over a year after the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) uncovered a coordinated group of Wikipedia editors introducing anti-Israel bias and misleading information, the online encyclopedia remains reluctant to amend much of the problematic content, according to the organization.
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt expressed disappointment, stating, “We had expected these editors to be removed and their edits reversed. Almost nothing has changed.” This follows the ADL’s 2025 report, “Editing for Hate,” which highlighted manipulation of Wikipedia content regarding Israel, Palestine, and related topics.
The ADL’s investigation pointed to a coordinated effort between editors being at least twice as active as similar groups in influencing content. While there have been some editor bans, the ADL remains concerned that many issues remain unresolved.
In 2026, the ADL published “Damage Done: Wikipedia Leaves Biased Edits Unchecked Despite Editor Bans,” revealing that biased edits from banned editors have largely gone uncorrected. The organization reviewed multiple articles and found that 91% of a banned editor’s edits were still on Wikipedia.
As an example, a banned editor’s account, Iskandar323, continued influencing narratives by editing over 485 times across significant Wikipedia entries, even after responses such as bans were implemented. Many of these changes occurred after specific conflicts, highlighting ongoing biased content manipulation.
Despite discussions by Wikipedia’s Arbitration Committee recognizing the disruptive behavior of Iskandar323, the impact of these coordinated biases persists. For instance, significant content related to Hamas, such as antisemitism and human rights abuses, was moved from the “Hamas” article to a lesser-read article titled “Criticism of Hamas.”
Greenblatt compared this lack of corrective action to leaving graffiti on public buildings after arresting the vandal. This analogy emphasizes the importance of reviewing and altering biased edits instead of merely banning perpetrators.
The ADL’s report acknowledges some decreased visibility in coordinated activities among the 30-editor group; however, it notes that bias persists through subtler means. The 2026 review found 19 active accounts editing Israeli-Palestinian articles, with eight evading sanctions.
Public perception of Wikipedia as an unbiased resource faces challenges due to these discrepancies. Wikipedia’s influence on search engines and AI models, like ChatGPT and others, raises the stakes for maintaining balanced and factual content.
The ADL recommends measures to improve Wikipedia’s accountability including private identity verification of editors, ending anonymous IP editing, and stricter oversight of sensitive topics. For search engines and AI developers, increased transparency regarding the use of Wikipedia as a source is advised.
Continued legislative oversight of Wikipedia’s biases, a coordinated task force against content manipulation, and collaboration with civil leaders are among the suggestions for policymakers. The ADL encourages public vigilance in verifying quotes and citations, especially those found in AI-generated outputs.
