Trump Sends Well Wishes to Pope Leo XIV Amid Cancer Recovery

President Donald Trump extended his well wishes to Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday after the pontiff was diagnosed with lung cancer. The president, speaking to reporters on Air Force One during his trip from Arizona to Montana, expressed hope for the 71-year-old pope’s recovery following surgery to excise part of his right lung.

Trump said, “I want to see Pope Leo get well. I know the prognosis for this type of condition. It’s significant. But the prognosis appears promising,” emphasizing his desire for the pope’s swift recovery.

The president highlighted his friendship with the pope’s brother, describing him and his wife as fervent supporters of Trump. “His brother, a fantastic guy and a friend of mine, is a great supporter. They have MAGA in their home,” Trump noted, emphasizing the strong bond Leo’s brother shares with the pontiff.

The previous day, the Vatican confirmed Leo’s diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, identified during a 90-minute surgery at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. The Holy See Press Office indicated that doctors successfully removed the lower lobe of his right lung without complications.

The Vatican revealed that tests confirmed the cancer diagnosis, aligning with earlier examinations. The pope himself had earlier acknowledged finding a small lump in his lung and followed medical advice to undergo surgery. After the operation, Pope Leo awoke without issues and was returned to his hospital room after a brief observation.

Pope Leo XIV’s recent engagements included a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump praised Rubio for his ability to enhance diplomatic relationships, highlighting his contributions to international relations.
