Rory McIlroy on LIV Golf and Changing Perspectives

Rory McIlroy’s Journey with LIV Golf

In the early days of LIV Golf, Rory McIlroy emerged as a vocal critic of the league. As LIV’s future becomes uncertain, McIlroy has adjusted his viewpoint. His recent reflections suggest a shift in his perception towards LIV Golf and its impact on players who left the PGA Tour. His comments at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum highlighted this change.

McIlroy’s Reflections on LIV Golf

Despite the harsh criticism in the past, McIlroy now admits that LIV Golf had some potential. He remarked during the forum in New Delhi that the league had an idea worth pursuing, but lacked strategic execution. “They had a lot of capital, but I think a lot of that capital was wasted,” said McIlroy. He suggested that partnering with governing bodies might have led to more beneficial outcomes rather than merely enriching already wealthy tour professionals.

Impact of PIF Withdrawal

The Saudi Public Investment Fund’s withdrawal of support significantly impacted LIV Golf’s operations. This change possibly contributed to McIlroy’s softened stance. He acknowledged that welcoming back LIV players to the PGA Tour could be advantageous for business. “A rising tide lifts all boats,” McIlroy stated, indicating benefits for tours if former members return.

Changing Stance on LIV Players

Earlier this year, McIlroy began advocating for the reintegration of LIV players into PGA Tour events. He expressed that their return could be “good business.” McIlroy reiterated his support for this idea at the Bloomberg Forum, emphasizing that all parties involved with tours would benefit from the presence of these players.
