Kimberly Guilfoyle Resigns Amid Allegations and Calls for Investigation

The White House announced the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle on Tuesday following accusations of misconduct. Within two hours of the announcement, Guilfoyle confirmed her resignation, ending speculation about her professional future.

Facing severe criticism over her actions, Guilfoyle maintained her innocence, promising to “vigorously defend” her reputation. President Donald Trump’s administration requested her departure after allegations surfaced of improper and possibly illegal activities during her time in Athens. At a press briefing, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia stated that Guilfoyle had been an asset to their team, and they wished her well. Trump, expressing disappointment over the reports about Guilfoyle, noted he had not directly spoken to her but confirmed she would not remain in her position.

The accusations against Guilfoyle included alleged threats to a host country official, accepting improper gifts, and offering to leverage her influence in return for financial favors. These claims were reported by The Wall Street Journal, which also detailed Guilfoyle’s alleged unethical interactions with a Trump donor.

In her resignation statement, Guilfoyle denied all accusations. She emphasized her lifelong commitment to justice and her long public service career. Her lawyers argued that her financial requests were for unpaid work, and any travel on private planes adhered to State Department guidelines. Despite repeated calls, her legal representatives did not provide further comments on Tuesday.

Senator Marco Rubio, initially supporting Guilfoyle, later refrained from public comments, criticizing journalists for treating the allegations as confirmed facts. The State Department’s inspector general is investigating the claims, with the possibility of more formal proceedings if initial findings suggest misconduct.

In Greece, the controversy stirred political tensions. Greek opposition parties urged an immediate inquiry, citing national dignity concerns. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis assured that Guilfoyle received standard diplomatic treatment.

Despite challenges, Guilfoyle had focused on energy concerns during her tenure, given Greece’s strategic importance in the Eastern Mediterranean. However, her connection with executives in the energy sector contributed to her difficulties.

U.S. political figures, including senior Democrats, have demanded a thorough investigation. Reports indicated Guilfoyle’s controversial remarks at receptions and her questionable alliances with energy firms. Speculation about her behavior continued with additional claims reported by the media, including tensions at the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, with a background in media and law, was a former Fox News Channel host and prosecutor. Her personal history included marriage to Democrat Gavin Newsom, currently California’s governor, and engagement to Donald Trump Jr.
