A retired San Francisco deputy police chief and her daughter were found dead in what authorities suspect to be a murder-suicide. The incident involved Ann Mannix, 65, a former SWAT commander, her daughter Katie, 24, and her husband Kevin Mannix, a 68-year-old retired police sergeant.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office reported that the preliminary investigation points to a double-murder suicide with Kevin Mannix identified as the shooter. Miguel Almaguer, the sheriff’s public information officer, confirmed these details in a statement released to the public.
The suspected shooter is male,Almaguer stated. He further identified Kevin Mannix as the person who allegedly committed the act but did not provide details on the evidence collected from the scene.
The tragic event has drawn parallels to another case involving a former Virginia lieutenant governor in a murder-suicide scenario. Deputies responded to a 911 call at the family’s Mill Valley home around 5 p.m. Sunday. The caller, another resident who managed to escape, reported the incident.
Inside the residence, deputies discovered the three family members dead. The situation has been described as devastating by Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association. He addressed the loss of Ann Mannix, her daughter, and Kevin Mannix, emphasizing the impact on the police community.
Ann Mannix made history by becoming the first woman to head the SWAT team. Additionally, she was involved with youth sports and served on the board of the Police Activities League. Her competence and popularity in law enforcement were noted by Lou Barberini, a former police officer and columnist.
Autopsies for the victims were scheduled for Tuesday, and the investigation continues as details emerge. The San Francisco police department has not yet released further comments regarding the case.
