The South Carolina U.S. Senate debate on Sunday night brought intense exchanges between Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., and her Democratic challenger Annie Andrews. Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener also participated in the debate.
Sen. Graham expressed concerns about what she referred to as ‘socialist Democrats.’ She highlighted the incident on Oct. 7, 2023, where Hamas terrorists attacked Israelis, noting the alleged celebrations by Democrats in New York over the tragic loss of lives. Graham voiced skepticism about Andrews’ willingness to oppose the Democratic Party. ‘Annie Andrews will not stand up to the socialist Democratic Party. She’s only going to join them,’ Graham stated.
Annie Andrews countered Graham’s accusation, asserting her readiness to challenge her own party. ‘I told you my opponent was going to call me a socialist, and there she’s done it again,’ Andrews remarked. She noted Graham’s repeated references to names like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Zohran Mamdani, claiming it was a part of Graham’s script.
Andrews emphasized her identity, stating, ‘The truth is my name is Annie Andrews. Unlike my opponent, I haven’t changed my name recently.’ She underscored her commitment to putting South Carolina first, contrasting it with Graham’s perceived allegiance to national interests.
Graham clarified rumors about her name, explaining, ‘My legal name is Graham and has always been Graham.’ She revealed that she kept the name Graham to maintain a connection with her deceased parents. ‘Every document I have ever signed has Graham on it,’ Graham added.
Following the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to complete her brother’s Senate term. President Donald Trump is supporting Sen. Darline Graham’s election campaign for a full six-year Senate term.
