Hurricane Isaias: Trail of Destruction Across the Southeast
Hurricane Isaias wreaked havoc from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Carolinas over the weekend, making landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm. The storm hit on Friday night and tore through the Southeast, causing extensive damage and loss of life.
At least four fatalities were reported: two in Florida and two in Alabama. In Milton, Florida, violent wind gusts 15 miles from the coast uprooted a massive tree, which fell on a house where Phyllis Hennebery was resting. Her experience highlights the storm’s unexpected severity for many residents.
“I never expected to be 77 years old and go through this,” said Phyllis Hennebery, showing CBS News the destruction caused by the fallen tree in her home.
As reported, roofs were torn off apartments and walls ripped away from bedrooms throughout the region. By Monday morning, around 150,000 Florida customers remained without power, with Alabama counting more than 20,000 outages.
Community relief efforts were underway, as Pastor Jonathan Kaushal’s church group distributed food and water to those affected.
“Lots of people in need after the hurricane and so we just want to be there for the community,” Pastor Jonathan Kaushal said.
In addition to the primary damage, the storm’s remnants spawned at least eight confirmed tornadoes across Georgia and the Carolinas, including one that removed a home’s roof 90 miles west of Charleston. Western North Carolina experienced substantial flooding with over half a foot of rain.
Tropical Storm Rachel: Impacts on the West Coast
As the Southeast dealt with Isaias, the West Coast faced challenges from Tropical Storm Rachel. The remnants of Rachel delivered 8-foot waves that battered homes south of Los Angeles. The Coast Guard intervened to rescue a man trapped in a sailboat that ran ashore on Sunday morning.
Flooding extended into southern Nevada, affecting the Las Vegas Strip. In Utah, intense weather disrupted the Moab 240 ultramarathon, requiring rescue efforts for 70 stranded runners due to severe floods.
