Virginia’s Long-Standing Voting Rights Violation

Virginia’s Long-Standing Voting Rights Violation

For 150 years, Virginia consistently breached federal law by broadly disenfranchising individuals with felony convictions. This was confirmed by a federal judge’s ruling.

Son Huynh, who has faced struggles following a felony conviction, expressed his intent to vote in the upcoming November elections. Despite his challenges, he requested his face not be shown in photographs as he works to reintegrate into society after his incarceration.

Before his conviction, Huynh was an ardent voter. Raised in California, he learned about voting rights in school, alongside most American children. His parents emigrated from Vietnam, and Huynh spent parts of his childhood there before the family moved to Virginia when he was about 13. Voting became a significant source of pride for him.
