Christa Pike returned to prison after being released from a hospital where she was treated following a failed execution attempt. Her legal team provided details regarding the situation.
Pike’s attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, and Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, confirmed her return to Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she has spent over 30 years.
“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years,” the statement read.
In their statement, they expressed her gratitude for the care provided by first responders and medical personnel during these challenging times. They also noted that she continues to receive medical care at the prison and highlighted their ongoing commitment to monitoring her recuperation.
Pike, aged 50, was hospitalized after surviving two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital on September 30, an execution attempt for the 1995 murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. Her attorneys recently described her physical recovery as remarkable. However, they raised concerns regarding potential long-term impacts and her legal status.
The botched execution has renewed debate about the methods states use for carrying out the death penalty, with a focus on lethal injection procedures.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
