A Rhode Island murder case, unresolved for over four decades, may have reached a conclusion with evidence found in an unexpected place. William “Billy” Morton was taken into custody on October 6 and charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing Hillary Hellewell in Newport in 1985.
Recent advancements in DNA technology have brought new evidence into the investigation, connecting 61-year-old Morton to the crime. Hellewell was discovered deceased on May 19, 1985, in Newport, Rhode Island.
Key Breakthrough in a Cold Case
Following her death, pointers began suggesting Morton’s involvement. However, investigators needed a sample of his DNA to confirm their suspicions. In August, an investigator observed Morton at a concert where he left behind a water bottle. This bottle provided the crucial DNA match to evidence found on Hellewell’s body.
Prior to this development, Morton had a conviction in 1987 for a violent sexual assault in Newport, occurring only 45 days after Hellewell’s death.
The Crime and Initial Investigation
Hellewell, aged 22, was found by two brothers on a sidewalk early on May 19, 1985. She was wearing painter’s pants, a sweater, and socks, with her shoes missing. Medical reports concluded her death resulted from asphyxia by strangulation, deeming it a homicide.
Investigators noted a bloodstain on her pants and a soiled blue T-shirt nearby. Forensic analysis identified spermatozoa, suggesting sexual contact. Although several men close to Hellewell were eliminated as potential suspects, the police initially struggled to find a solid lead.
Reevaluation of the Case
In 2004, authorities revisited the case hoping DNA advancements could yield new insights. DNA profiles were entered into the FBI’s CODIS database. The Rhode Island Attorney General’s office, forming a Cold Case Unit in 2023, revisited Hellewell’s case.
Further testing linked DNA evidence to Morton’s family, turning him into a prominent suspect. Investigators discovered Morton’s prior conviction tied closely to Hellewell’s murder.
Gathering Evidence
In August 2023, an investigator discreetly followed Morton to a concert and retrieved the water bottle he left behind. Subsequent DNA analysis confirmed the match to evidence linked to Hellewell’s murder, prompting Morton’s arrest on October 6.
Law enforcement picked him up from his residence as he left for work. The case was presented to the Rhode Island District Court Second Division and is set to proceed to a grand jury, according to Attorney General Peter F. Neronha.
A status conference is arranged for October 20. Attempts to contact Morton’s attorney for comments were unsuccessful.
