Dear Carolyn:
Recently, I visited a friend with whom I’ve shared a connection since sixth grade, spanning about five decades. We cherish our time together and always find joy in each other’s company. During my recent visit to her hometown, we took a drive through the bustling highways of California. Unfortunately, her frequent phone usage while driving left me alarmed.
She repeatedly checked her phone for various activities like Googling information or reading texts. This behavior, while common in today’s era, seemed dangerous given the busy roads we were navigating.
Feeling concerned for our safety, I decided to voice my worries to her. Rather than receiving understanding, my concerns were met with mockery, making me reflect on the difficulty of addressing risky behaviors with loved ones, even when safety is at stake.
