El-Sayed, Rogers Debate Marks Heated Senate Race in Michigan

Michigan’s U.S. Senate candidates Abdul El-Sayed, a Democrat, and Mike Rogers, a Republican, exchanged sharp criticisms and personal accusations during a heated debate in Grand Rapids. This event was their first face-off ahead of the closely watched November election.

The debate began with a focus on affordability but quickly devolved into personal attacks. Rogers criticized El-Sayed’s medical credentials, while El-Sayed accused Rogers of profiting from corporate ties.

Rogers called El-Sayed a ‘con man’, questioning his citizenship and medical background. El-Sayed retorted, asking voters to consider their own financial strain under Rogers’ potential leadership.

Discussion of personal finances was contentious, with El-Sayed accusing Rogers of benefitting from past corporate relationships and ownership of property in Florida. Rogers denied yacht ownership and questioned El-Sayed’s overseas investments.

The debate moderators intervened multiple times, highlighting the debate’s intensity. Moderator Rick Albin expressed surprise at witnessing candidates continue their arguments during commercial breaks.

Policy disagreements were stark on international issues like U.S. support for Israel and Iran. El-Sayed opposed using taxpayer dollars for foreign military aid, while Rogers emphasized defensive support for Israel.

Domestically, El-Sayed proposed federal price controls to combat high gasoline prices, while Rogers suggested alternative solutions like temporary gas tax relief.

Healthcare was another flashpoint, with El-Sayed advocating for Medicare-for-all and Rogers cautioning against loss of private insurance.

The debate occurred amid an exceptionally competitive Senate race, with recent polls showing El-Sayed slightly ahead. Both candidates vie for the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, with Republicans aiming for a flip and Democrats hoping to retain it.
