The National Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Isaias intensified to Category 2 strength on Thursday evening. The storm is expected to further strengthen as it moves toward the Florida Panhandle, projected to arrive late Friday. Although the precise path may alter as Isaias advances north through the Gulf, the hurricane is likely to approach land near Pensacola.
Forecasters anticipate that Isaias could weaken slightly before making landfall. However, it is expected to remain at least a Category 1 hurricane. Areas in the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi should brace for damaging hurricane-force winds. A hurricane warning is in place for these regions.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to prepare for potential prolonged power outages caused by the hurricane. Heavy rainfall and storm surge could occur far from the hurricane’s center, particularly to the east. Experts predict a life-threatening storm surge from the Mouth of the Mississippi River to Suwannee, Florida.
The latest tracking map, including spaghetti models from various forecasting tools, helps visualize Isaias’ predicted path as it progresses toward the US Gulf Coast.
