During a campaign rally in Nebraska, President Trump shared a rare personal detail about his wardrobe. At the event in Grand Island, he was there supporting Senator Pete Ricketts, who faces a challenging race against independent Dan Osborn in the November midterm elections. Known for wearing smart suits since his 1980s business days, Trump had previously released his own menswear line, the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection. This included suits and accessories sold at major retailers.
In the 2000s and during his tenure on The Apprentice, Trump became linked with the Italian luxury brand Brioni. However, on Monday, he revealed that his suit was from Jos. A. Bank, a more budget-friendly brand, marking a change from his usual high-end preference. This drew considerable attention, as Jos. A. Bank, established in 1905 in Maryland and owned by Tailored Brands, offers suits ranging from $149.99 to around $700 for their American Bespoke line.
There’s a clear price gap compared to Trump’s previous choice of Brioni suits, which typically cost between $5,500 and over $16,000. Trump’s decision to showcase the affordable suit coincided with Tailored Brands’ efforts to return to the public market following their 2020 bankruptcy. In April, they filed for a proposed initial public offering, submitting a registration statement to the SEC in July, though this has not yet concluded.
Debate Over Suit Origin
The choice of Trump’s suit prompted discussions about its origin. Observers noted some Jos. A. Bank suits are made in Asia, particularly China and Bangladesh, which contrasts with Trump’s advocacy for domestic manufacturing under his “America First” agenda. This policy encourages domestic production through tariffs, a stance sometimes scrutinized when Trump-associated products are made overseas, such as the “God Bless the USA” Bibles reportedly printed in China.
Jos. A. Bank’s American Bespoke line, made in the U.S. with imported fabrics, was mentioned, though the suit Trump wore has not been confirmed as part of this collection.
