Tom Cruise’s Latest Film ‘Digger’ Sees a Disappointing Opening

Tom Cruise, often seen as a leading icon in Hollywood, witnessed one of the least successful openings of his career with the debut of ‘Digger’. This dark comedy, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, did not perform well financially, grossing only $8 million domestically and $12 million internationally. The production and marketing costs of the movie were substantial, estimated between $125 million and $150 million, with an additional $100 million for marketing.

Despite Cruise’s past success, including the impressive $1.5 billion worldwide box office of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Digger’ did not meet expectations. These results were surprising, considering Cruise’s reputation and the involvement of Warner Bros., although it marked a transitional moment as Warner Bros. merges with Paramount Skydance in a significant $110 billion acquisition.

Industry analysts, like Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak, note that such a disappointment doesn’t overshadow decades of Cruise’s successes or his value to studios. The film’s struggle suggests lessons about budget allocation, positioning, and managing expectations, yet Cruise’s appeal to studios remains strong.

The challenge was that having Tom Cruise as the star didn’t automatically make it a Tom Cruise blockbuster

The top performer at the box office was Amazon MGM’s ‘Verity’, a psychological thriller led by Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, debuting with $32.6 million. It outperformed another debut, ‘Resident Evil’, which earned $12.5 million, and ‘Heart of the Beast’, featuring Brad Pitt, which brought in $11 million.

Critics were not favorable towards ‘Digger’, as reflected by its 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, Cruise participated actively in its promotion, including a high-profile interview with GQ magazine. A notable event was the film’s London premiere, attended by Prince William and Princess Catherine, part of a royal charity screening for the UK’s Film and TV Charity. David Beckham also appeared at the premiere with his sons.

Dergarabedian highlighted that this is not the end for Tom Cruise’s influence in Hollywood. Studios are still keen to work with him, as his brand remains robust despite the specific challenge ‘Digger’ faced in appealing to a broad audience.
