A church in McKinney, Texas, aimed to show support for Israel by creating a prominent display of 1,200 small Israeli flags. This was meant to honor the approximately 1,200 victims of a deadly Hamas attack that occurred on October 7, 2023. The display was organized by Len McLaughlin, the senior pastor of Heritage Church, as part of a remembrance week.
McLaughlin expressed the spiritual connection behind the display. He stated, “We feel it is biblical and deeply spiritual to be a church that supports Israel. We feel it is important to take a moment to remember those folks, and in their memory, we put the flags up.”
However, the tribute became a target of vandalism. Upon arriving at the church, McLaughlin found hundreds of flags uprooted and piled carelessly. He remarked on the act, describing it as disrespectful and carried out under cover of darkness. The pastor said, “They came in the darkness of night. They’re cowards who did this. They’re not patriots.”
Despite this setback, some community members stepped in to help. McLaughlin recounted that five strangers, including a couple of women from a nearby veterinary clinic, worked to restore the flag display. This show of support extended to local residents such as Russ Mortenson, who found the act of vandalism hard to understand yet was impressed by the gesture.
The church has also received threats related to the flag exhibit. As a response, they plan to enhance security measures during the display’s duration. McLaughlin emphasized the importance of addressing the vandalism legally, hoping for the perpetrators to be fined and recognized as committing a criminal act.
