The White Sox emerged victorious in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians in a tightly contested matchup at Progressive Field. Right fielder Braden Montgomery played a pivotal role, delivering a crucial two-run double that shifted the momentum in favor of Chicago. His swing brought in two runners, allowing the Sox to take the lead in the sixth inning after trailing 2-0 earlier in the game.
Montgomery, confronted with aggressive pitching early in the game, adjusted his strategy for reliever Erik Sabrowski’s pitches. He mentioned, “I wasn’t playing the guessing game. Just ready for (Sabrowski’s) hardest stuff and ready for something over the plate.” His decisive hit helped secure a 4-3 victory, with the game ending in front of a lively crowd of 32,050 supporters.
Sean Burke delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching 5 1/3 innings while limiting Cleveland to a single run and striking out six batters. Grant Taylor contributed by closing out the game, successfully navigating the final four outs.
Chicago faced initial challenges when Nathaniel Lowe of the Guardians hit into a bases-loaded situation, resulting in a 2-0 deficit. A wild throw from reliever Sean Newcomb compounded the situation, but Chicago managed to regroup.
Manager Will Venable spoke about the team’s spirit: “There’s no stopping, there’s just this mentality that we’re going to play all nine innings, all 27 outs, whatever happens, happens.” His emphasis on persistence was evident as Kyle Teel sparked the Sox’s offense in the fourth inning, followed by solid contributions from Miguel Vargas and Munetaka Murakami.
As the game moved into the later innings, Montgomery stepped up with two outs, seizing the moment with a two-run double. His actions gave Chicago the lead. Not far behind, Chase Meidroth singled, allowing Montgomery to score and extend the lead to 4-2.
Burke’s strong pitching performance laid a stable foundation for the Sox, characterized by 13 consecutive outs at one point. “It was big-boy stuff,” commented Venable on Burke’s effort. The Guardians managed to fight back slightly when Jo Adell hit a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning. However, the team’s resolve held firm.
The game concluded with Brenton Doyle’s athletic catch in left-center field, securing the 4-3 triumph. “You hold your breath a little and you see it’s Brenton Doyle,” Montgomery said, reflecting the relief and confidence Doyle brings to the team.
Manager Venable expressed joy about returning home: “Regardless of how this went here, really excited to be able to give playoff baseball to our fans. The environment has been special for our guys.” With the series shifting back to Chicago for Game 3, the Sox are poised to leverage their home-field advantage in ongoing playoff action.
