Jake Brooks: A Determined Force Both on and off the Field

Naperville North junior linebacker Jake Brooks finds peace and tranquility outdoors. His love for camping takes him to Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, part of Michigan’s Manistee National Forest. This place on Lake Michigan’s shore is near Ludington, close to Traverse City, where his grandparents reside.

Brooks states, “Me and my friends go,” highlighting that his family shares his nature enthusiasm. They avoid hunting during these getaways. Yet, on the field, Brooks is relentless against opponents.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 210 pounds, Brooks is a pivotal player for the Huskies, currently holding a 6-1 record. He attacks with precision, as noted by Naperville North’s defensive coordinator, Chris Arthurs. “He sees people, and he’s flying to the ball,” Arthurs emphasizes.

Brooks is having a breakout season. Alongside senior linebacker John Lyons, they form what Coach Sean Drendel calls “our two-headed monster.” Brooks boasts 31 tackles, seven for loss, and leads the team with four interceptions. His recent fumble recovery against DeKalb contributed to the Huskies’ decisive 42-14 win.

His defensive prowess helped restrict opponents, allowing only 9.8 points per game during their winning streak. Arthurs praises Brooks: “He studies film, he practices hard, and all those things lead to great results.” Brooks attributes success to a well-utilized offseason. He says, “We worked together and pushed the team.”

The defense’s display against DeKalb was impressive. They allowed just 123 offensive yards. Brooks, discussing the performance, notes, “It’s our homecoming—we wanted to come out hot.” The Huskies forced turnovers, with Brooks and Lyons recovering fumbles, the latter returning his for a 30-yard touchdown.

Lyons appreciates playing alongside Brooks, who also manages punting and kickoff duties. Brooks averages 36.3 yards per punt, with 14 out of 33 kickoffs leading to touchbacks.

Lyons regards Brooks as an outstanding athlete. “I truly believe he can play any position on the field,” he states. Brooks excels at linebacker, handling his role with running back agility.

His athletic ability contrasts with his family background, where soccer and wrestling predominated. Brooks, “the first football guy,” credits physical training for his success. “Working out is paying off,” he acknowledges.

Brooks is keen on college football. Arthurs believes his size and experience make him a promising candidate. Brooks has exchanged basketball and baseball for football, declaring, “I just love the passion of the game.” He is committed to achieving more through hard work.

The Huskies aim for excellence this season. Brooks is optimistic. “We can make a really good run,” he asserts, envisioning a path to the state championship.
