Oakland Hills Tragedy: The Lives and Legacy of Bryn Walker Co-Founders

Bryn Walker’s co-founders, Bryan Walker, 61, and Michelle Min, 63, were tragically found dead outside their Oakland Hills home from gunshot wounds on Friday. Police are actively investigating the situation but have yet to determine the person responsible for firing the weapon. The deaths have sent shockwaves through their family and community.

The Oakland Police Department has been contacted for comments, with requests made outside regular office hours on Monday.

From Small Beginnings to National Brand

What began as a modest Berkeley retail business in 1992 evolved over decades into a nationally recognized women’s clothing brand. Bryn Walker now operates six company-owned stores, selling through about 1,000 boutiques nationwide. This growth illustrates the significant reach and impact of their brand.

Details of the Shooting

Police responded to reports of gunfire on October 2 in the Panoramic Hill area, near the University of California, Berkeley. Despite lifesaving attempts by officers and paramedics, Walker and Min were pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered, and detectives have not ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide. Though police do not seek additional suspects, they assure there is no continuous threat to the community.

Suspicions of a Murder-Suicide

Paul Min, Michelle’s brother, expressed his belief that Walker might have shot Michelle before ending his life. This conflicted with his long-standing view of Walker as honest and hardworking. Paul noted Walker had lost millions in risky financial ventures, which had visibly affected his mental health.

Concern for Walker’s well-being had grown, and discussions about psychiatric treatment and potential institutionalization occurred within the family. Paul discovered a list of treatment facilities, indicating that Walker might have been aware of such plans, though it remains unclear if this influenced the tragic outcome.

Michelle Min’s Impactful Life

Michelle Min was deeply involved in supporting her family after immigrating from Korea in 1977. With parents juggling multiple jobs, she took on a caregiving role for her brother, Paul. She and Walker later aided their parents through health challenges and stood by Paul during his battle with Stage 4 colorectal cancer.

The couple’s dog, Pip, a miniature Australian shepherd, was found at their home and is now under a friend’s care.

Community Remembrance

A vigil held in Berkeley saw residents paying respect to Walker and Min, despite many attendees not knowing the couple personally. The gathering reflected the community’s shared grief and the profound impact of the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

The Oakland Police Department continues its investigation into the case, inviting anyone with information to come forward. The community remains engaged, seeking closure in understanding the circumstances surrounding this loss.
