Elizabeth Mays from Aurora knows her grandson’s fascination with trucks. On Saturday morning, this interest led them to the Community Hero Day at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum. ‘Kids love trucks,’ Elizabeth remarked, observing how children enjoy interacting with these large vehicles.
This event, in its ninth year, offered kids and parents the chance to engage with first responders and explore various emergency vehicles, including fire, police, and other service trucks. The four-hour event featured numerous activities such as fire truck rides through downtown Aurora, hands-on truck exploration, a live fire department demonstration, a free CPR class, and face painting. Attendees could enjoy offerings from a food vendor, and the atmosphere was lively with music from a live DJ.
Brian Failing, the executive director of the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, mentioned that the event has almost a ten-year history. ‘We aimed to bring together community heroes, including fire, police, and various community services,’ he explained. Initially broader, the focus has shifted more towards fire and life safety, showcasing critical operations of the fire department. The event now includes demonstrations like vehicle extrication, complementing traditional fire demonstrations.
Organizers noted that Community Hero Day typically draws around 1,000 visitors annually. ‘Families enjoy the personal interaction with different organizations and vehicles,’ Failing stated. ‘They value seeing what it takes to maintain a safe community, with fire truck rides, live demonstrations, and truck exploration remaining particularly popular.’
Brittany Brunner from North Aurora attended for the first time, visiting a canine officer station. ‘This event unites the community and acknowledges local service members,’ she said. ‘It’s wonderful to see families engaging with each other and learning about community services.’
Brunner also highlighted the potential impact on children. ‘These experiences might encourage them to pursue careers in these fields in the future,’ she noted.
The successful Community Hero Day affirms its role in bringing families together while highlighting vital community services.
