Dining with Steve Hilton: A California Dream Debate

Meeting Steve Hilton

My father laughed heartily when I mentioned dining with Steve Hilton. “Isn’t he with Trump?” he asked in Spanish. Indeed, Hilton, known for his affiliation with Trump and former host on Fox News, aims to become California’s next governor. His strategy includes attracting Latino voters through promises of affordability and lower taxes. Hilton boldly advertises that Trump critics could vote for him rather than his Democratic rival Xavier Becerra and still sleep peacefully.

During our meetup at King Taco in East Los Angeles, my dad and I sported our best libertarian looks. Hilton arrived in a casual outfit that suggested a readiness to party.

“He’s going to say whatever suits him,” my dad joked as we waited.

A Challenging Conversation

In May, I invited Hilton for tacos with my dad and me after the internet ridiculed him over his comments about hard-shell tacos. Unfazed, Hilton increased his efforts to reach Latinos, even serving tacos at community events.

Hilton spoke candidly about poverty, crime, and daily struggles, asserting a belief that Democrats expect Latinos to perpetually support them. I credited him for recognizing Latinos as the “past and future” of California. His opponent, Becerra, seemed to campaign effortlessly, coasting on expectations.

Immigration Views

While Hilton drew praise for his optimistic messaging, his stance on immigration sparked a debate. His claim to support only “legal immigrants” alienated families like mine, who came without papers before gaining citizenship. Hilton explained he supported those aspiring for legal status, not those already legalized, which prompted a thorough discussion on undocumented immigrants’ desires for reform.

Our conversation touched on racism, with Hilton denying it fueled Trump’s policies despite the current administration’s actions impacting Latino communities. He acknowledged heavy-handed immigration practices but didn’t fully denounce them.

Final Impressions

Hilton’s offer to address living costs rather than prioritize undocumented immigrants left my father unconvinced. While appreciating Hilton’s likable and approachable demeanor, the visit ended with lingering hesitations about voting for him.

Hilton admired California despite its challenges, promising a focus on freedom and reducing bureaucracy. My dad appreciated the sentiment but remained skeptic about Republican leaders, characterizing them as wealthy and disconnected.

As our meal concluded, Hilton made a final pitch to my dad. Despite mutual respect and shared immigrant experiences, my father chose not to support Hilton’s candidacy, voicing the desire for politicians who prioritize the less privileged.
