Texas Law Enforcement Foils Potential Capitol Attack with Arrest in Austin

On Wednesday, Texas law enforcement officials announced they had obtained credible information regarding a possible violent attack planned at the state’s capitol in Austin, leading to the arrest of a suspect.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) shared with Newsweek that they received a tip-off on Tuesday night about the plot. As a result, officers arrested Benny Caldera Jr., a 40-year-old resident, at his home in Converse early Wednesday morning.

The suspect faces charges of felony terroristic threat against a public servant and is currently held at Bexar County Jail.

DPS leadership notified Texas State Legislators of the threat and arrest earlier today, and the Texas Capitol remains open for regular operating hours,” the department’s statement read. “DPS will continue to have an increased posture at the Texas Capitol to protect all employees, visitors, and state officials. Further details will not be provided as the investigation remains active.

The intended target of the attack has not been disclosed. Texas DPS collaborated with the FBI and local partners in managing the situation. The FBI directed inquiries to the DPS.

State Governor Greg Abbott expressed support by posting on X, “Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol. Thank you, [Texas DPS], for a job well done.”
