The South China Sea became a hotspot for conflict once more as a Chinese Coast Guard vessel collided with a Philippine government ship. The incident was captured on video, adding to the ongoing tensions between Manila and Beijing.
During the incident, which occurred at 11:13 a.m., the Philippine vessel BRP Datu Magat Salamat was distributing fuel to Filipino fishermen. The collision took place approximately 54 nautical miles off the coast of Palawan province. Manila asserts this area is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
Footage from the Philippine Coast Guard showed crew members shouting, “Brace for impact!” just before the impact occurred. Post-collision photographs revealed damage, including bent railings and scattered debris, on the Philippines’ ship deck. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Philippine officials allege that the Chinese Coast Guard rammed the civilian government vessel deliberately, accusing Beijing of hindering a humanitarian and livelihood mission. Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard concerning West Philippine Sea issues, reported that the Chinese ship initially cut across the stern of the Philippine vessel at a distance of around 33 feet. Not long after, it repeated the action, ultimately leading to the collision.
Contradicting Manila’s claims, Chinese Coast Guard spokesperson Jiang Lue stated that the Philippine vessel intentionally adjusted its course, accelerating to cross the Chinese ship’s path. China maintains that their ship was conducting lawful operations near Sabina Shoal and holds the Philippine side responsible for the accident.
The collision drew international attention, with U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Lipton condemning the China Coast Guard’s actions. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Manila accused the U.S. of supporting Philippine provocations in the disputed regions.
This event is part of a broader pattern of maritime confrontations between the two nations. Earlier incidents include Manila’s accusation of China firing water cannons at Philippine government vessels near Scarborough Shoal and an altercation involving a Philippine Navy member at Second Thomas Shoal.
