In Temascalcingo, Mexico, an explosion involving pyrotechnic material at a festival led to the collapse of a wall. This tragic event resulted in at least 10 deaths and injured 64 people. The incident took place during a celebration for a patron saint at the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church.
The explosion happened on Saturday night, as many gathered to view a firework display included in the religious festivities. Temascalcingo is located about 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City and is home to around 66,000 residents.
The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation to uncover the explosion’s cause. Among those injured were two priests, as confirmed by a local bishop. Social media footage reveals individuals searching through smoke and debris for survivors.
Citing a video on social media, people were seen navigating the aftermath in efforts to locate survivors.
Using fireworks in street celebrations and religious events is a frequent practice in Mexico. Explosions are not rare occurrences. Previously, a significant explosion in Huejutla, located in Hidalgo, injured 17 people approximately four years ago.
