FBI’s Initiative Leads to Capture of Suspect in SNAP Benefits Fraud

The FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters initiative has achieved a notable milestone with the arrest of Manjit Singh Bedi, marking the fifth capture in just three months. Bedi, accused of significant SNAP benefits fraud, was apprehended in India, and authorities are working to extradite him to the United States for prosecution.

Launched in June, this initiative targets fugitives involved in major financial crimes. It has resulted in the arrests of five fugitives, cumulatively accused of over $2 billion in fraud, and had previously evaded capture for nearly 4,000 days.

According to the FBI, Bedi allegedly defrauded the U.S. government of at least $600,000 via a SNAP benefits fraud scheme. He is accused of misusing SNAP recipients’ EBT cards at his grocery store in Tacoma, Washington, by providing cash instead of eligible food and retaining a portion of the benefits.

After Bedi’s indictment on charges of wire fraud and SNAP benefits fraud, he was ordered to surrender his passport and remain in Washington state. However, investigators state he fled across the Canadian border and later to India, leading to a federal warrant for violating his release conditions issued in May 2026.

“Five Most Wanted Fraudsters captured in just three months is a historic success for this initiative,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.

The FBI offered a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to Bedi’s arrest and conviction. Indian authorities facilitated his arrest, showcasing the global reach of U.S. law enforcement efforts.

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald emphasized the global commitment to holding fraudsters accountable, echoing the sentiments of ongoing collaboration between the Justice Department and the FBI.

The bureau remains committed to returning Bedi to the U.S. to face charges. The pursuit of justice continues worldwide, ensuring no refuge for those accused of defrauding the government.
