U.S. Sailors Dock in Pattaya for Rest and Relaxation

Videos and images on social media have captured scenes of U.S. sailors arriving in Pattaya, Thailand, renowned as Thailand’s ‘Sin City,’ after a lengthy deployment at sea. The crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln had been away for 286 days, facing challenges including food shortages and mental health concerns. Despite these issues, President Donald Trump dismissed such worries.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group, deployed in November 2025 as part of the U.S. naval operations in the Iran conflict, reached Chon Buri in Thailand on Wednesday. This marks a five-day rest and relaxation stop for the sailors. The USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. arrived in Sriracha, Chon Buri, while the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls docked in Map Ta Phut, Rayong province.

Pattaya city officials coordinated with U.S. Navy representatives, addressing arrangements that included behavioral guidelines for the crew. While Pattaya is famous for sex tourism, recent efforts have been made to rebrand the city as a family-friendly location, offering amenities like golf courses, malls, and outdoor activities such as water skiing and skydiving.

The USS Lincoln’s commanding officer cautioned service members against using prostitutes. Violations of these guidelines are punishable under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. MS NOW indicated that any breach of the rules would result in the maximum penalty.

U.S. personnel were warmly received in Pattaya. Restaurants and billboards extended greetings to the American service members. According to the Bangkok Post, sailors began exploring the city’s attractions, with particular interest in the renowned Walking Street. Additional buses transported personnel from Laem Chabang to Pattaya, with many chartering vehicles for extended exploration.

Social media captured sailors’ activities, such as videos showing them discovering the neighborhood. Comments ranged from observations on their appearance to expressions of understanding for their situation. One TikTok video showed a U.S. serviceman enthusiastically dancing in a nightclub, generating sympathetic remarks. Another clip depicted American personnel entering a bar, sparking discussions about Pattaya’s bustling scene.

Images on Instagram displayed sailors relaxing at locations like swimming pools and bars, highlighting a good-natured visit that local media suggested would economically benefit Pattaya, welcoming approximately 5,000 personnel.

However, Thai police responded to a minor incident involving two American service members near Walking Street. The situation was quickly resolved, and the men returned to the aircraft carrier, staying onboard for the remainder of the port call.

The U.S. military’s connection to Pattaya dates back to the Vietnam War, when Thailand hosted numerous American service members near Sattahip naval base and U-Tapao airfield, where U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers were stationed.
