Darrell Mattison’s Unyielding Focus
Morgan Park’s Darrell Mattison, a senior free safety, feels every ball thrown his way is a chance to prove himself. Known for his determination, the Ole Miss recruit excels by maintaining a consistent focus on the field.
Mattison describes himself as a ‘ball hawk’, actively influencing the quarterback’s decisions. While he doesn’t consider himself violent, his playstyle is aggressive and vocal. Off the field, he’s loud and humorous, something that doesn’t amuse his opponents.
Performance in Recent Game
Mattison showcased his defensive prowess in a recent 26-10 nonconference win against Niles Notre Dame at Rockne Stadium, Chicago. He racked up six tackles, two pass breakups, and two deflections.
Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. threw three touchdowns for the Mustangs, while senior running back Will Smith Jr. scored a 40-yard touchdown. Mattison continued to establish himself as one of the top defensive backs, preventing a touchdown with a tackle at the 5-yard line when Morgan Park led 18-10 in the fourth quarter. Four consecutive incompletions ended the threat for Notre Dame.
Teammates and Coaches Praise Mattison
Ronald Smith expressed admiration for Mattison, highlighting his ability to deliver highlight-reel plays and intercept passes. Morgan Park’s coach Chris James emphasizes Mattison’s exceptional talent, noting his rare skills and fearless approach.
Mattison’s recruitment by SEC schools, such as Ole Miss, impresses his teammates. He plans to graduate early and enroll in January at Oxford, Mississippi, following his commitment in June.
Mattison’s Athletic Attributes
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 165 pounds, Mattison combines his physical attributes with great ball instincts. His role as the deep back in the secondary allows him to assess the entire field for Morgan Park, with the freedom to move when needed.
Despite initially aiming to be a standout receiver like his coach, Mattison embraced his role as a safety during a JV game in his sophomore year. His natural ball skills convinced him of his aptitude for this position.
Leadership and Personal Traits
As the eldest of four siblings, Mattison displays leadership and ambition. He assists in coaching his 6-year-old brother’s youth team and has a playful demeanor that boosts team morale.
Though Mattison’s family gravitates toward basketball, his affinity for football’s physicality stands out. His playful demeanor turns intense during games, channeling his energy into football.
“I’d rather take my anger out here than elsewhere,” Mattison shared. He noted that opponents often fear him when he remains silent during their trash talk.
