Rising Football Participation and Safety Concerns

Participation in tackle football is increasing again after a decade-long decline. Recent safety changes have contributed to the resurgence. However, a significant study is introducing new concerns about safety.

High school football saw a rebound in participation following the pandemic, as evidenced by recent statistics. Coach John Hart, who leads Brownsburg High School, noticed significant changes in practice routines over the years. His current sessions are different from those 15 years ago. Practices now eliminate tackling to the ground and rarely exceed 90 minutes. Hart humorously noted that his past self might have been shocked by these changes, saying, “I’d probably kick my own butt.”
