Cubs Roster and Bullpen Dynamics Amid Season End

Chicago Cubs Roster Under Close Scrutiny

The Chicago Cubs roster is facing intense analysis. Recent developments, including the reappearance of utility player Matt Shaw, are noteworthy. The bullpen’s performance will also be critical as the team anticipates the potential returning players, left-hander Hoby Milner and Edward Cabrera, transitioning from starter to reliever.

September Player Additions

As of September, the Cubs can add two players, with one designated as a pitcher. Friday’s 10-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds highlighted the bullpen’s importance as the Cubs navigate the remaining 27 games. Manager Craig Counsell and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy focus on perfecting a group of eight pitchers for potential postseason action. Performances like Friday’s will contribute valuable data for their decision-making process.

Cubs bullpen allowed eight runs. Each of the three relievers gave up at least one run. Trent Thornton’s five-run sixth inning marked a turning point.

Thornton entered the game with a 2.32 ERA, having not allowed a run in August and conceding only four since June 24.

“He made some bad pitches and then they hit them,” Counsell stated post-game. “Trent’s been performing well, quite consistently, but he struggled today.”

Challenges with Bullpen Composition

The Cubs bullpen consists of eight men, where only three pitchers possess minor-league options: Ryan Zeferjahn, Ryan Rolison, and Daniel Palencia. This limits flexibility, potentially necessitating the release of a current bullpen member to include Milner if activated after a minor-league rehab for an appendectomy.

Reports suggested Milner had been designated for assignment, but Counsell refuted this claim. “That’s not accurate,” he clarified post-game. “I can’t comment any more than that, but that’s not accurate.”

Edward Cabrera’s Status

Cabrera engaged in a live batting-practice session, aiming for a rehab assignment to address blister issues. “We’re going to do some shorter stints with him,” Counsell confirmed. This approach aims to mitigate previous injury risks as Cabrera reenters the bullpen mix.

Long Relieve Strategy

Aaron Civale and Colin Rea serve as long relievers. Civale allowed two unearned runs over 2 1/3 innings, while Rea’s opportunities have been limited, pitching only three innings since August 9. “He’s healthy, (it’s just been) game situation,” Counsell stated regarding Rea.

Matt Shaw’s Return

Cubs’ offense strengthened upon Shaw’s return from the IL, with Kevin Alcántara optioned to accommodate Shaw’s versatility. Shaw faced delays due to setbacks from a hand injury and expressed relief at returning. “It tested my patience, for sure. I’m glad to be back,” Shaw shared.

Shaw contributed a significant pinch-hit double in the eighth inning, supporting an attempted comeback. The Cubs’ offensive push, however, fell short as Seiya Suzuki was left stranded. “You score eight runs and I think you’re pleased,” Counsell remarked. “But giving up 10 runs makes winning challenging.”
