The USS Theodore Roosevelt is preparing to sail to the Middle East. It will relieve another aircraft carrier as the U.S. military maintains a naval blockade in the Arabian Sea.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt will depart San Diego and join other U.S. warships in the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) area. This deployment will last over seven months, as reported by USNI News. It will relieve the USS George Washington.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet stated that the Navy avoids discussing future operations due to security concerns. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle noted the constant conflict and stress on the force. Caudle emphasized the need for a more predictable deployment schedule to reduce stress on sailors and their families.
“We do these extensions in little chunks, and the families don’t see any endpoint so they can plan their own lives,” said Caudle. “That creates a lot of stress for sailors.”
The USS George Washington, a Nimitz-class carrier, recently arrived in the Middle East. It replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln, which faced criticism over reports of poor conditions onboard and affected sailors’ mental health. The Abraham Lincoln is now headed to Thailand for a port visit.
Since the U.S. began its conflict with Iran in late February, there has been at least one U.S. aircraft carrier in the Centcom region. Over 20 U.S. warships are enforcing the blockade in the Arabian Sea. Last month, the U.S. military redirected 75 commercial vessels, disabled three, and boarded two for compliance with the blockade, according to Centcom.
