On Wednesday, Jonathan Kuminga made headlines by joining the Minnesota Timberwolves on a two-year, $12.4 million contract. NBA insider Shams Charania from ESPN reported this unexpected move. Notably, the deal includes a player option for the second year.
Kuminga had interest from several other teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers had been seen as strong contenders, offering comparable financial terms and a potential starting role. However, Kuminga opted for a shorter-term prove-it deal with the Timberwolves. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, this provides him with more control over his future and the flexibility to re-enter free agency next summer. Kuminga also received offers from the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers.
In Minnesota, Kuminga will join a promising roster. Anthony Edwards returns, alongside defensive powerhouse Rudy Gobert and forward Jaden McDaniels. The addition of point guard LaMelo Ball enhances the Timberwolves’ prospects for the upcoming season, making them potential contenders for an NBA title. Kuminga is expected to start as the power forward, a position made available after the trades of Julius Randle and Naz Reid.
“Kuminga is still just 23 years old, aligning perfectly with the young core of Edwards, Ball, and Jaden McDaniels,” reported Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick. “All of whom are 25.”
Timberwolves’ aggressive recruitment was key in Kuminga’s decision. Anthony Edwards played a significant role in the recruitment efforts. Team president Tim Connelly even traveled to Miami for an in-person meeting with Kuminga, and productive discussions also took place with coach Chris Finch. If the team chemistry works out, the Timberwolves may become a dominant force in the Western Conference. If not, the situation could become volatile.
