FAA Looks to Video Gamers for Air Traffic Control Shortage Solution

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is recruiting video gamers to address air traffic controller job shortages. This initiative has introduced over 2,000 recruits into the system. The recruitment effort aims to tap into skills that gamers possess, like concentration, pattern recognition, and multitasking, which are crucial in managing air traffic.

Air traffic control is a demanding job with considerable stress, as controllers are responsible for many lives. Video gamers could potentially handle such responsibilities due to their relevant skills. However, the long-term staffing need is not solely resolved by increasing the applicant pool. High attrition rates persist in transitioning from recruitment to certification.

Applicants must be under 31, U.S. citizens, and meet security and medical requirements. Only about 10% meet these criteria and enroll in training. Despite the need for more controllers, standards must remain stringent.

Canada’s NAV program offers an example where a private nonprofit handles air traffic control. While NAV also experiences controller shortages, privatization remains a possible discussion point for U.S. air traffic control. It could protect controllers from pay lapses during government shutdowns.

Artificial intelligence (AI) could assist in easing controller workloads, managing routine tasks, and allowing humans to focus on critical areas requiring judgment. Implementing AI in air traffic control would require thorough research and testing.

While video gamers contribute valuable skills, they alone cannot solve staffing issues. Comprehensive reform in recruitment, retention, and AI integration is needed. The FAA must broaden its pool of qualified candidates, offer competitive compensation, and ensure consistent pay despite government shutdowns.

Structural issues must be addressed for the U.S. to maintain its claim as having the safest and most efficient airspace. Without such changes, controller shortages will remain a concern.
