Alter stated that Kanter Freedom’s return to Wintrust Arena hinges on him proving that he can adhere to their rules without posing a threat. Alter’s decision followed interactions with spectators near Kanter Freedom, who confirmed his role in initiating the engagement with Cloud.
I would characterize it as trash talking, nothing personal, basketball-related, but enough to get her attention and to engage her, and, in my opinion, try to provoke her,
Alter explained. Although Kanter Freedom did not trespass onto the court, Alter believed his actions constituted a threat. Kanter Freedom initially approached the player on the court, marking the confrontation’s escalation.
Kanter Freedom has had a noticeable history in basketball, drafted as the No. 3 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. His career included periods with various teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Portland Trail Blazers.
More recently, Kanter Freedom gained attention with a social media video challenging the WNBA’s transgender participation policy, stating intentions to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft unless changes were made. During the Sky game against the Fever, he wore a shirt featuring the definition of a woman. His actions during the game led to an interaction with Cloud that resulted in his ejection and subsequent ban.
Natasha Cloud, aged 34, boasts a long tenure in the WNBA since 2015, including a championship win with the Washington Mystics in 2019. She has earned accolades such as the WNBA All-Defensive First Team selection and was the league’s assists leader in 2022. Following the incident, Cloud did not address the confrontation at postgame press conferences.
According to the Front Office Sports report, a Sky spokesperson mentioned Cloud’s conversation with team and league security post-game. While the WNBA declined to implement a league-wide ban on Kanter Freedom, individual interactions and responses to his actions remain a focal point.
