Tua Tagovailoa’s tenure with the Atlanta Falcons is off to a rocky start. Since joining the team after being released by the Miami Dolphins, Tagovailoa has failed to impress in head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense. The Falcons initially hoped to start the season with Tagovailoa as their quarterback, allowing Michael Penix Jr., who’s recovering from an ACL injury, more time to heal. However, reports from ESPN/NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport indicate that the starting quarterback role is now Penix’s to lose due to Tagovailoa’s inconsistent performance.
During a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts on August 19, Tagovailoa struggled to distinguish himself. In the first preseason game against the Denver Broncos, he completed only 3 of 5 passes for 22 yards before the Falcons turned to other options such as Jack Strand and Cooper Rush. This lackluster performance in both practice and game situations has led to increasing doubts about Tagovailoa’s ability to secure the starting position.
Rapoport commented, “The organization wanted Tua to be the starting quarterback from the outset, giving Michael Penix time to recover. However, Tua’s performance has not met expectations.”
Despite the setbacks, the Falcons expected Tagovailoa’s fresh start with the team to lead to meaningful competition for the starting job. Now, with Penix returning to practice and sharing first-team reps, it seems the Falcons are adjusting their hopes that he will be healthy enough to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.
Stefanski stated, “Our focus is on competitiveness. We push each other by showing up and working hard, not just on position battles.” Another chance for Tagovailoa to boost his standing could arise in the upcoming preseason matchup against his former Dolphins squad, potentially lifting his confidence and chances for the starting role.
Still, the outlook remains uncertain for Tagovailoa with a crucial decision looming for Stefanski and his staff before the Falcons face the Steelers on September 13.
