Nightcaps: Dolly Parton’s Impact and Weekend Sports Highlights

Nightcaps is a daily column that covers major sports, news, and culture stories you might miss during work hours. It runs Monday to Friday on OutKick.com.

Meeting Dolly Parton

Throughout my career, I haven’t been easily starstruck. My job has introduced me to many famous faces, including top MLB and NFL athletes, as well as actors and musicians. However, I remain grounded by the fact that celebrities are ordinary people. Yet, encountering Dolly Parton was different.

In 2016, wildfires devastated Gatlinburg, Tennessee, burning 17,900 acres, damaging 2,400 structures, and taking 14 lives. Dolly not only donated money but also initiated the My People Fund, giving millions of dollars to affected families. I was managing social media for the Titans then and joined a telethon she organized.

Walking into the studio, her appearance was striking—bright hair and shimmering rhinestones. “Thanks for coming,” she greeted with a generous smile, “I’m Dolly!” I was momentarily speechless. Her kindness exceeded my expectations, defying the saying that one shouldn’t meet their heroes.

Dolly’s Legacy

Beyond the wildfire relief, Dolly’s impact is profound. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she established Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, sending millions of free books to children worldwide. She funded scholarships, supported Dollywood employees’ education, and donated millions to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Her philanthropic endeavors were not a side project; they defined her character. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, articulated her legacy by saying, “She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened changed history.” Dolly taught us the value of genuine kindness and authenticity.

Controversy Over NFL Sunday Ticket

The NFL Sunday Ticket’s hefty price of $480 was shocking. As longtime subscribers, my husband and I were surprised by an early auto-renewal charge. It felt unfair, especially considering our team’s less-than-stellar performance. This unexpected expense underscores the growing costs associated with sports entertainment.

Celebrities and Romance

Olivia Jade, an influencer and Lori Loughlin’s daughter, is dating tennis player Taylor Fritz. While reports suggest they’re taking things slow, it’s a notable moment in celebrity circles. As summer nears its end, relationships are in the spotlight.

To wrap up today’s column, it’s important to honor Dolly Parton, the Queen of Tennessee. Her legacy transcends music, as her contributions to society have made a lasting impact.
