Thinking differently has paid off for Kaneland quarterback Brody Guthrie, now in his junior year. Promoted to varsity last season as a sophomore, Guthrie filled the backup quarterback position. The decision initially gave Knights coach Mike Thorgesen pause. ‘We kind of went against our norm,’ Thorgesen noted. ‘Typically, we only elevate players if they’re going to play. With more JV games, we brought Brody up last year to sit behind Jalen Carter.’
Guthrie still gained experience through JV games, learning the offense thoroughly and preparing to assume leadership. His progress became evident during the season opener where Kaneland triumphed 49-7 over Rock Island. In his first varsity start, Guthrie impressively completed 9 of 11 passes, totaling 203 yards and scoring three touchdowns.
Senior receiver Colten Van Dyke caught three passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Cooper Stombres received two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown. Expressing enthusiasm, Guthrie recalled how brief appearances in games prepared him well. Guthrie credits his seniors and coaching staff for aiding his understanding of the offense. Carter, now a freshman defensive back at Northern Illinois, played a supportive role.
‘He took me under his wing,’ Guthrie shared. ‘Jalen helped me understand the reads and guided me during 7-on-7s.’ This past Friday, Carter cheered Guthrie from the sidelines. His path to quarterback wasn’t straightforward, having started in fourth grade as a safety and receiver. By eighth grade, Guthrie switched positions after growing from 5-4 to 5-9.
Currently living in Elburn with his family, Guthrie recalls his early love for throwing the football, prompting him to try quarterback. His impressive arm secured his spot. ‘In my first game, I threw a 45-yard touchdown on my first play. It got me hooked,’ Guthrie reminisced.
Alongside football, Guthrie enjoys basketball and track but is devoted to football. He trains with former Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Hohensee. Sunday morning practice sessions at Go For It Sports Dome in Yorkville, referred to as ‘The Breakfast Club,’ refine his skills.
Coach Thorgesen praises Guthrie’s determination and effort. His teammates elected him captain. The experienced defense continues to guide the team as the offense falls into rhythm. Guthrie’s confidence in the team is unwavering. ‘Our players want to win, and we’re going to win,’ he stated.
