On Sunday, Louisiana State University (LSU) announced their intention to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who recently spent time with the Cleveland Browns. This decision sparked debate due to a couple of factors. Wright previously experienced NFL play before deciding to return to the college arena. Furthermore, Wright’s connection to current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, having played under him at Ole Miss last season, added another layer of controversy.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) maintains a rule regarding intraconference transfers. Athletes are generally prohibited from transferring within the conference unless they utilize the spring transfer portal window. LSU contends that Wright is not transferring directly from Ole Miss but instead from the NFL, having last been with the Browns.
On Monday, LSU further cemented their approach by welcoming another former Ole Miss player. Defensive lineman Zxavian Harris is poised to join the Tigers, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals. During his previous season with the Rebels, Harris recorded 58 tackles and three sacks. Despite spending time with the New Orleans Saints, he was waived on August 8.
Rival SEC schools have expressed that they wish to see the conference impose penalties on LSU for seemingly circumventing the league’s transfer regulations. Nonetheless, LSU is determined to keep Wright on their roster for the upcoming fall season. Their plans also include integrating Harris into the team under similar circumstances.
Earlier this month, Lane Kiffin spoke in favor of athletes gaining flexibility in their fifth year of eligibility. Kiffin argued, “These kids, if they get a fifth year, they should be able to go wherever they want. Any conference. Anywhere.” He highlighted the potential hardships athletes face, such as returning to teams that no longer need them, or encountering new coaching staff that reshapes team dynamics.
This summer, LSU actively challenges the SEC’s standing rules. With new acquisitions on board, LSU’s willingness to test the limits has set a stage for potential conflicts. The outcome of these decisions may significantly impact the players’ futures and the dynamics within the SEC.
