Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson spoke at a press conference on Monday to address comments he made about the team’s fans. He aimed to clarify his earlier remarks and provided an explanation.
After being named the starting quarterback, Watson realized that criticizing the fan base was unwise. Despite being booed during Saturday’s preseason game, he wanted to clear up any misunderstandings. Watson stated, “First off, I want to address the comments from Saturday after the game. I think just human nature and myself being very emotional, putting a lot of time these last two years to get back… I thought I was going to get a little different response.”
He acknowledged that his emotions influenced his comments and emphasized that they weren’t intended to target the fans. Watson expressed appreciation for the fans who have supported him, saying, “I understand the frustration. This organization put a lot of investment into getting me back in ’22, and things haven’t been going the right direction that we thought it would.”
During the presser, Watson explained his perspective without specifically apologizing. He noted it felt like he received more positive support during road games. Browns fans’ reactions can be linked to various reasons, including Watson’s past legal issues involving allegations by massage therapists in Houston, which led to an NFL suspension and fines.
Watson’s history of injuries also added to the tension. Since joining the Browns, he has missed significant playing time because of shoulder injuries and Achilles tendon tears. The team’s investment in Watson, which included six draft picks and a $230 million contract, adds to the pressure.
Watson expressed his determination to move forward and improve his performance. He stated, “Moving forward, I just want to focus on football… I thrive off the energy of the fans.” His goal is to provide strong performances for the team and community, aiming for success on the field.
