Sam Burns is set to represent the United States once more, securing an automatic spot on the U.S. Presidents Cup team. This marks his third appearance at the Presidents Cup and his fifth consecutive participation in Team USA events, which include both the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup.
The 30-year-old Louisiana State University alumnus, a five-time PGA Tour winner, has been a consistent presence in American golf. Despite his success, there is a new element to his appearances this year—his son, Bear, will be joining him and experiencing the team environment for the first time.
‘Bear this year, he’ll be around the team and get to hang out and really enjoy it,’ Burns shared in an interview with OutKick.
Burns and his wife, Caroline, welcomed Bear in April 2024 and their daughter, Belle, in July. Although Bear is only two years old and too young to grasp what his father is doing on the golf course, Burns values the opportunity for his children to witness him representing the United States.
Burns expressed how representing his country on an international stage is an honor, acknowledging that playing for Team USA is not just an individual achievement but a team effort involving fellow players and their families.
Golf is generally an individual sport, but for Burns, the weeks spent playing for the U.S. team are notably special. He believes these moments will be among the most memorable of his career.
Despite having five PGA Tour victories, Burns’s last win was in 2023. He almost clinched his first major championship, finishing second at the U.S. Open and third at The Open in recent tournaments. These near victories highlight his growing reputation in the golfing world.
Burns balances his professional life with family responsibilities. His recent experiences as a father taught him about his own impatience, yet he cherishes the love and attention his children seek.
‘You feel like they may be an inconvenience at times and then you just realize they want your attention and they want your love,’ Burns said.
This understanding affects Burns’s perspective on golf and life. Golf is important to him, but it does not define him. His Christian faith plays a significant role, offering him perspective when facing challenges in the sport such as maintaining patience despite the unpredictability of results.
