Former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan has endorsed incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan in a unique race featuring three candidates sharing the same name. This endorsement adds complexity to the competitive contest, where Sen. Sullivan alleges that teacher Dan J. Sullivan aims to confuse voters by running as a GOP candidate.
The former mayor took to social media, emphasizing support for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan as the original ‘OG’ Dan Sullivan. Meanwhile, teacher Sullivan denies accusations of trying to siphon votes, positioning himself as a moderate Republican challenger.
“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska,” wrote former Mayor Sullivan.
Legal efforts have been initiated by Republicans to remove Dan J. Sullivan from the ballot, citing his association with a Democratic-aligned consultant. Despite these challenges, Sullivan defends his candidacy as a legitimate expression of dissatisfaction with Sen. Sullivan’s performance.
Alaska’s nonpartisan primary system contributes to the confusion. The state uses ranked-choice voting, where voters rank candidates in order of preference. This system can potentially cause voter disorientation during the elections.
While Sen. Sullivan and Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola have advanced to the general election, the status of Dan J. Sullivan remains uncertain. The Alaska Supreme Court previously ruled in favor of keeping him on the ballot, following a Republican challenge.
Federal and state investigations are underway to determine if teacher Sullivan’s candidacy is part of a voter confusion scheme.
